Haunted houses inspired by hit Netflix shows and horror films
- Death Whisperer

This house is based on the top-grossing Thai horror film series of the same name, taking you into a cursed village in the year 1972. If that’s not enough to scare you, maybe the fact that it’s based on a true story, will. Beware the Black Spirit herself, as she embarks on her quest for a new host (you). The haunted house replicates some of the film’s most chilling scenes: from swamps, wheat fields, the witch’s hut and more.

This house has more of a rustic and natural vibe, with lots of kampung-like scenes. We expected this to be the scariest haunted house of the night, but it was surprisingly less scary than some of the other houses. There are a few chilling moments though: like walls with dripping “blood”. What’s unique about this house is it’s also 2 levels, which adds to the fear factor as you climb up and down flights of stairs.

2. Netflix’s Stranger Things

Netflix returns again this year with another themed haunted house, this time centred around the hit original series, Stranger Things. The house features some of the most terrifying events from Seasons 2, 3 and 4: including scenes from Hawkins National Laboratory, Starcourt Mall, Vecna’s blood-red mind lair and more.

Fans of the series will get to relive some of the most iconic moments IRL, and meet some of the fan-favourite characters in the flesh: the Mind Flayer, Demodogs, and of course, lots of Vecna. This haunted house is the least scary out of the 4, and feels more like you’re being immersed in the show itself. Though that’s not to say there aren’t any scares to watch out for!

3. Singapore’s Most Haunted: Build to Horror

Singapore’s Most Haunted makes a comeback in this new Singapore’s Most Haunted: Build to Horror haunted house, which hits the closest to home as it’s modelled after actual HDBs (anyone BTO-ing soon?) Unbeknownst to the residents living in this haunted “HDB”, they’re actually living on burial grounds of unclaimed bodies. Your familiar neighbourhood turns into a living hell, as familiar elements like your HDB lift lobby, living room, void deck and more turn dark and sinister.

It’s also a little more interactive, as you’ll be given a UV torchlight to search for hidden messages throughout the house. For us, this was the scariest house, in part because it’s also the biggest and longest house out of the 4—so you’re constantly wondering when the end is coming and you never know what’s going to jump out at you next.

4. The Unruly Immortals

Coming to you from the popular Chinese graphic novel, you’ll get to meet the characters of The Unruly Immortals live in the flesh for the first time ever. Follow along as Li Huowang, an 18-year old high school student, navigates 2 opposing realities. The haunted house toes the line between madness and sanity, making you question what’s real and what’s horror.

Asian-inspired horror houses always hit pretty hard, and this one’s no different: the set design and props are pretty elaborately done up, with plenty of blood and gore as well. This one is in our top 2 scariest houses of the year, and there are jump scares nearly every time you turn a corner.

Immersive scare zones & scary photo ops
1. The FEARground

Modelled to resemble a carnival fairground, this scare zone offers anything but amusement. Instead, expect gleeful frights, chaotic madness and quirky characters like Madame Marionette, Chatterbox Charlie and the Bonebreaker.

Those who are deathly afraid of clowns might find this scare zone a little scary, but otherwise the scare actors here are pretty playful and will gladly interact with you. We’re also told that if you touch them, they will touch you back—so consider this a fair warning.

2. The Realm of Yokai

This scare zone is inspired by the Hyakki Yagyō (Night Parade of 100 Demons). As the dreaded 13th hour strikes, spirits, demons, and forgotten creatures from ancient Japanese folklore come out to play in The Realm of Yokai.

Out of the 2 scare zones, this one’s by far the scariest: from the layout of the zone (it’s a one-way route, with nowhere to hide) to the creatures you’ll be seeing. You’ll be coming face to face with plenty of demons every time you turn a corner, and you’ll never know when one of them will lunge at you from behind the bushes.

Interactive & spectacular live shows to catch
- Dare or Die Live!

Step on up to watch the Death Devil’s twisted game show where each horrifying challenge is even more gruesome than the last, and you’re playing next. This show happens at The FEARground stage, where the Death Devil himself—a former (but now mutilated) daredevil bike rider—hosts his own version of a horrific game show.

If you’re watching in the crowd, you might just get picked to face off against another contestant in an epic battle of the Death Devil’s choosing. This show feels a more like a circus show, with plenty of theatrical elements like smoke, flames, acrobatics and more.
Set design & theatrics: 3.5/5
Scare factor: 2.5/5
2. Once Upon a Time…to Die

There’s no Happily Ever After here: the master of time, Mr Rabid, is desperate to prolong his life, through harvesting key “ingredients” from his victims. Sacrificing innocent victims to the dreaded “blood pool”, Mr Rabid goes on a killing spree to attain Beauty, Survival Instinct and The Innocence of Youth.

Happening at the Pantages Theatre, we thoroughly enjoyed this show: there’s plenty of laughs, dance, unexpected theatrics and stunning costumes. Some highlights to look out for: familiar elements inspired by Alice in Wonderland, Lady Gaga Mayhem Ball-esque props and that viral Coldplay cam moment.
Set design & theatrics: 4.5/5
Scare factor: 2.5/5
3. Blumhouse: Fear Lives Here

In this projection mapping spectacle, the signature films of famous horror producer, Jason Blum, come to life against the castle of Far Far Away. You’ll be able spot some of your favourite horror movie characters, including those from M3GAN, The Black Phone, Happy Death Day, and The Purge.

This attraction is the lowest on the horror scale, with no in-your-face scares. You will get to meet some of the neon-masked Purgers as they perform tricks live. The show happens every 30 minutes from 7.30pm onwards.
Set design & theatrics: 1.5/5
Scare factor: 1/5
Horror-themed immersive dining experiences
Blumhouse Bar: The Taste of Fear

Happening at Katie’s Grill is The Blumhouse Bar, an immersive dining experience with spooky-themed cocktails and eerie photo ops. Here, you’ll be able to come up close and personal with The Purgers, and even catch M3GAN‘s viral dance routine IRL.
Set design & theatrics: 1.5/5
Scare factor: 2/5

There will also be various spooky Halloween-inspired food served at the various restaurants and food carts around USS. Many of this year’s food items feature black-coloured eats, and treats topped with actual worms.
