Things To Do This Weekend (10 – 12 March 2017)

This weekend, you’re in for a treat with a multitude of craft workshops and conferences at the highly anticipated Singapore Design Week. Also, cherry blossoms are in full bloom at Gardens by the Bay so you need not plan out a long holiday to Japan to see the seasonal flowers.

1. Art Day Out! x Singapore Design Week 2017


If you were at Art After Dark during Singapore Art Week, you’d know that Gillman Barrack is a treasure trove of hidden art exhibitions, and littered with curious sculptures and murals. Art Day Out! is a daytime open house featuring the Handmade exhibition by Wallpaper* and a curation of unique luxury creations by artists and designers from all over the world. There will also be new gallery exhibitions, design workshops and an array of fringe activities from the ongoing LOCK ROUTE.

2. Singapore Design Week


There’s definitely something for everyone at Singapore Design Week, with a huge variety of events to participate in – there is the Design, Make & Craft Fair, a Design Trail Day Out in the City, and also its signature event, Innovation by Design Conference.

3. Into the Wild


Experience the wild like never before, thanks to the ArtScience Museum’s latest permanent development that takes you on an immersive virtual adventure. Watch over 1000 square metres of ArtScience Museum transform into a virtual rainforest, and explore the thick of the jungle using a smartphone device. You can take on a mission to replant the rainforests of Southeast Asia – for every tree planted, an actual tree will be planted in a rainforest in Rimbang Baling, Sumatra..

4. OH! Open House


Remember the past of Singapore with OH! Open House, with their walking tours and 18 site-specific artworks in residents’ homes and around the neighbourhood of Holland Village. Marvel at the works of local artists Joel Chin, Melinda Lauw and Yen Phang, take part in the exciting Hakka Cemetery tour for a blindfolded hike to a nearby site, admire works incorporated into the living spaces of residents in the HDB tour, or take a walk through the former colonial estate in the Chip Bee tour.

5. Blossom Bliss


Save on the air ticket to Japan and marvel at the beautiful cherry blossoms right here in Singapore. At Gardens by the Bay, pink and white cherry blossoms are in full bloom, as well as other flora you’d expect to see in Japan like peach blossoms and bonsai arrangements.

6. Naiise x Dazzling Café workshops


Local indie label Naiise is collaborating with Dazzling Cafe to host a variety of crafty workshops at the cafe. If you have time on your hands, try out brush lettering, floral arrangement, or make your very own soy candle amongst other things.

7. 5:5 pop-up store


Usually the go-to online store for Korean fashion, 5:5 brings in modern apparel and accessories from Korea’s foremost contemporary and designer labels. In their pop-up store, they have curated five themes: Bare Essentials, Hue New, Liquid Dream, Pink Permeated and Ready Set Glow. Look out for over 25 independent Korean labels like Salad Bowls, Brown Breath, and Sculptor. Be quick to grab what you want though, as stocks are limited to only 25 pieces per item.

8. i Light Marina Bay


Immerse yourself with 20 interactive installations around Marina Bay created by artists from all over the world for a mesmerising experience. Held since 2010, the plethora of innovative light art installations are designed with energy-saving lighting or environmentally-friendly materials to encourage people to adopt sustainable habits in their everyday lives. Expect to see visually stunning light installations and this year, there will be three themed festival hubs at different locations – The Promontory, Bayfront and The Float.
At The Promontory, there will be activities like a recycling and up-cycling market, an urban farming showcase, theatre and live music performances, and a crafts fair. Located at Bayfront, Gastrobeats is bringing you delectable bites from local artisans such as Skewer Bar, Poke Theory and Starker, music by famous acts like Discohue and a specially curated carnival experience by Uncle Ringo. Over at The Float, there is the massive Art-Zoo Inflatable Park with a whopping 11 larger-than-life, bouncy installations, a fun and immersive world exploring nature, art and animals – perfect for the young at heart.
