RETRO SOLO-DINING YAKINIKU SPOT IN SINGAPORE HAS PREMIUM BEEF, TONGUE, TRIPE & MORE!

Solo diners, here’s another spot for you to hit up if you’re into quality Japanese yakiniku. Taishu Yakiniku Horumon Mokurin is a unique and vibey yakininiku restaurant that’s just opened in the East, offering both premium cuts of meat and also rarer offal meats.

Manga-mori XXL Rice, $7

The retro-inspired space is vibey and cosy, and we especially like how there’s counter seating in front of the open kitchen that’s designed for solo and pair diners. If you’re dining solo, you’ll get your own personal grill to enjoy your yakiniku, and you can also watch the chefs prepare the meat up-close. What’s great about Taishu Yakiniku is that they cut and season all the meats to-order, so you can grill up your favourite meat cuts fresh, and at their most optimal taste. Big eaters can also order a jumbo XXL-sized Manga-mori Rice ($7) that comes with a giant mountain of white Japanese rice.

4-Kind Horumon Offal Platter, $25

Beef Tongue with White Leek, $26

You’ll get to enjoy your usual yakiniku meats like premium beef, chicken, pork and vegetables. But those who enjoy eating more unconventional cuts like offal (innards) and tongue will definitely enjoy this place—these rarer cuts are not so readily available in Singapore, and even if they are, they’re not always of the best quality. Taishu Yakiniku’s offal and beef tongue cuts are well-cleaned and fresh, without that funky gamey smell. More adventurous eaters can go for their 4-Kind Horumon Offal Platter ($25) that comes with Small and Large Intestine, Chicken Liver and Tripe. They’ve also got a couple of beef tongue options, each with various toppings like the Beef Tongue with White Leek/Onion Leek ($26).

Wagyu Zabuton Loin, $37

Karubi with Green Chili, $19.80

Wagyu Yukke with Grated Yam, $27

We’re not huge fans of beef tongue and offal, so we much preferred their other beef cuts; of which there are plenty to choose from. Beef comes in various cuts like Skirt Steak (Harami), Short Rib (Karubi), Loin (Rosu) and Premium Wagyu. If you’re down to splurge a little, definitely get the Wagyu Zabuton Loin ($37), it’s got the perfect amount of marbling so each bite is tender and melt-in-your-mouth. The Karubi with Green Chili ($19.80) is also a great option, and the chopped chilli helps to cut through the grease. Raw beef lovers must get the Wagyu Yukke with Grated Yam ($27), an indulgent beef tartare with hand-chopped beef tossed in a rich egg yolk and freshly-grated yam for that smooth and sticky mouthfeel, without any gaminess.

Mokurin Soup Chicken Rice, $17.50

Beef Dashimaki Tamago, $12

Rich Chicken Paitan Dandan Noodle, $18

Aside from yakiniku, you can also get cooked dishes here: like the Mokurin Soup Chicken Rice ($17.50), which is an ochazuke-style dish of rice, shredded chicken and assorted toppings, doused in a hot chicken broth. They also offer a pretty extensive selection of alcoholic drinks like highballs, shochu, beer, sake and more, with glasses starting from $9.50 each.

Dishes at Taishu Yakiniku start from $5 each, but most meat dishes average from $10 to $30 per plate/platter. Is this the most affordable yakiniku spot around? Definitely not, and we would consider it a little more on the upmarket end instead of a “fast food”-style yakiniku restaurant. The vibe is still kept very casual and approachable, much like a Japanese izakaya, and service is attentive. Despite the higher price point, we still feel the price is justified as you get fresh cuts of meat that are prepared-to-order and not pre-prepared ahead of time; and the quality of the meat also speaks for itself.
