Interesting fusion creations in the heartlands of Hougang

Wild Blooms Cafe Singapore (4)
With its bright turquoise interior, rustic dried blooms, and blue and red tinted windows, Wild Blooms is a floral-themed 2-storey cafe nestled in Hougang that’s beautiful, daring, and a refreshing change from the usual cookie-cutter cafes.

As you head up the stairs to where more seats await, a giant 4m-tall floral feature wall will greet you. Extremely intricate and perfect for using as a photo backdrop, we learnt from one of the cafe’s co-owners that it was painstakingly handmade petal by petal, along with the whimsical light fixtures and other decor!

Dishes to look out for

Wild Blooms Cafe Singapore (15)
Just like its decor, Wild Blooms’ extensive menu is filled with a mix of staple cafe grubs and unique dishes that have been given a refreshing twist of their own. Most of the dishes and desserts are made in-house, and with one of their co-owners part of the folks behind popular bars The Mad Men and Symmetry, it’s hardly surprising to see unique items like “Matcha Seaweed Fries”, “Charcoal Wings”, and “Sambal Pulled Pork Charcoal Burger” on the menu!

Snacks

Wild Blooms Cafe Singapore (17)
Almost similar to what you’ll find on a menu of bar bites, the snacks selection at Wild Blooms consists of Truffle Fries ($8.90), Salted Egg Yolk Fries ($8.90), Mozzarella Sticks ($9.90), and more. For something less ordinary, give their Matcha Seaweed Fries ($8.90) and Charcoal Wings ($10.90 for half a dozen) a try.

The matcha powder and seaweed seasoning on the fries seemed like an unlikely combination, but they balanced out each other perfectly and would be a hit with matcha-lovers.

As for the wings, they were finger-licking good with a homemade spicy squid ink glaze that resembled the crowd-favourite sweet and spicy Korean “yangnyeom” flavour. Topped with a generous sprinkle of sesame seeds and spring onions, it packs quite a punch, so don’t say that we didn’t warn you!

Mains, burgers, and pasta

Wild Blooms Cafe Singapore (16)
Dig into value-for-money mains, burgers, and pasta at Wild Blooms, which are all priced affordably at less than $15 each. The portion sizes are quite large too, so if you’re not feeling particularly hungry, you can even share it with a friend!

For something warm and comforting, go for the Beef Ochazuke ($14.90). It’s a simple Japanese dish made by pouring green tea, dashi, or hot water over cooked rice and not commonly found in most cafes!

Served with house-brewed brown rice green tea and sticky Japanese rice topped with tender ribeye slices, sesame seeds, and seaweed strips, it’s a refreshing alternative to the usual soups and risotto!

Wild Blooms Cafe Singapore (9)The burger comes with a side of fries – add on $2 to upgrade to truffle fries!

If you’re looking for a more hearty dish, opt for the Sambal Pulled Pork Charcoal Burger ($13.90). Made with freshly-baked charcoal brioche, Sichuan spices, and pork belly that’s been slow-braised for 6 hours, it’s sweet and great for those who can’t handle their spice well. Don’t let the house-made sambal mayonnaise scare you –  the spice helps to cut through the cloying richness of the mayonnaise without burning your tongue!

Wild Blooms Cafe Singapore (11)You can spot the tiny chilli flakes upon closer inspection!

If noodles and spice are up your alley, make sure to order the Al-nero Di Sepia ($14.90). Like most squid ink pasta, this dish was packed full of flavour, topped with juicy calamari rings and prawns, and noodles perfectly cooked al dente. It came as a pleasant surprise that the pasta was spicy too, which added a nice touch to the rich-tasting noodles!

Desserts

Wild Blooms also boasts a wide array of photo-worthy cakes, pastries, and waffles. Indulge in their Rose Apple Pie ($5.90) that’s stuffed with tangy apricot jam filling, go digging into their Flower In A Pot cakes ($8.90) that’s topped with edible “soil” and “flowers”, and savour their invigorating house ice cream flavour – Chrysanthemum!
