Street parties, festivals, and cherry blossoms
The March school holidays are here, and while most of us don’t get to enjoy them anymore, it doesn’t mean that there’s nothing to rejoice about this week either – the weekends are filled with action-packed carnivals, artsy street parties, and festivals for every film and literary buff out there!
1. District Design Dialogue

Not everyone’s a creature of habit – if you’re bored of your everyday routine, spice up your weekend at District Design Dialogue, an artsy block party that transformed actual residences into stages for live performances, workshops, and experiential exhibitions that are completely out of this world.

We’re talking pop-up rage room and tattoo studio in houses “The Lounge” and “The Blackout Hangout” respectively, as well as a workshop for you to try your hand at actual DJ-ing at “The Stage”. As part of Singapore Design Week 2018, there’ll be a total of 10 such houses to visit, with concepts ranging from fashion and music, to food and lifestyle.
Entry to each house is free, with the exception of the Playground, but different programmes will be held every day, so make sure to check the schedule on their official website and book a ticket if it’s needed!

2. Guinness St. Patrick’s Festival 2018

If you’re someone who can’t refuse a refreshingly cold pint of beer, head down to the Guinness St. Patrick’s Festival with your fellow bar-hopping buddies for their annual “beer paradise”!
Happening at Circular Road, you’ll be able to enjoy discounted pints of beer, have your selfie printed on beer foam, get temporary tattoos for free, and win prizes like a pair of sunglasses or even a free pint by simply finding a “Gold in your Guinness” sticker on the bottom of your beer glass!

Of course, there’ll be blood-pumping music blasting in the streets to get you all hyped up, challenging games, and photo booths to immortalise your friend’s drunken stupor.

3. Clarke Quay Streetfest

As part of the Singapore Festival of Fun 2018, Clarke Quay Streetfest is where you’ll find a parade of phenomenal street acts from the acclaimed UK’s Covent Garden street theatre.

Besides acrobats and jugglers, highlights of the festival include Guinness World Record holder and escape artist Rob Roy Collins, who’ll be performing a brand new “escape from chains” routine, together with contortionist Bendy Em, who’ll squeeze herself into a 16 inch box, and Betty Brawn, a lady strong enough to bend metal and swing 2 grown men around.
The Tree – a giant walking tree inspired by LOTR – will also be lurking around, blending in with its fellow stationary pals, so don’t get a shock when you see a branch swaying more than it should!

4. Urban Ventures Street Party Vol. 9

Thanks to Singapore Design Week 2018, we’ve got a whole lot of fun events to head to – the Urban Ventures Street Party included. Expect not just live DJ sets and pop-up F&B stalls, but also pole-dancing performances, a drag queen lip sync battle, an artisan marketplace, and free manicures and face painting!

On top of all that, there’ll also be live music performances by local talents such as Wallflower and Disco Hue, plus a space-age Augmented Reality photo booth to up your photo sticker booth game.
Here’s the best part – admission is free, including entry to a craft workshop by Tinee Dino, a Latin dance class, and a street yoga session! All you have to do is to sign up for each programme here.

5. Singapore Improv Festival

Wordsmiths and literary enthusiasts, treat yourself to a night of witty storytelling at the Singapore Improv Festival, where there’ll be a repertoire of unscripted stories, comedic skits, and songs based off suggestions made by the audiences.
An assemblage of international improv troupes and local acts will be performing, including 4th Players from the Philippines, Imfrog from South Korea, and homegrown talent Les Musicables.
What’s more, there will be workshops carried out for those who want to learn from the masters of quick-thinking themselves! Sign up fast, because most classes are limited to just 25 people.

6. Danish Film Festival

If you’ve always been one for underrated and less mainstream films, sign yourself up for a discovery session of some of the best Danish cinematic gems at the annual Danish Film Festival.
A total of 5 art and design-centric films will be screened at The Projector, such as Bugs, which follows 2 chefs’ on their journey around the world to find edible insects, and a documentary on internationally renowned furniture designer Børge Mogensen in Børge Mogensen: Designs for Life.

7. Thrillogy at Sentosa

Outdoorsy peeps, you’re in for some cheap thrills at Thrillogy at Sentosa, with outdoor movie screenings, overnight camping at Palawan Green, and night tours at Fort Siloso all for free.
The popular Las Vegas to Macau and Ip Man trilogy will be airing on Saturday and Sunday respectively, and a total of 30 slots on the open field will be available for you to set up your own little cosy fort – no equipment will be provided though, so bring your own tent and camping necessities!

As an added bonus, there’ll be sports and games for you to participate in at Siloso Beach as well, like beach volleyball, soccer, and even archery tag.

8. Sakura Matsuri (Cherry Blossom Festival)

Spring is just around the corner, and with it comes the highly-anticipated cherry blossom season. For those of us who can’t afford to take time off to jet away to Japan, Gardens by the Bay is kicking off the inaugural Sakura Matsuri this weekend with stunning cherry blossom displays and an anime-themed carnival.
From now until 8th April at the Flower Dome, the cherry blossom display will be peppered with Japanese-themed elements like a traditional teahouse, rickshaw, and torii gates. Other programmes include a Japanese tea ceremony demonstration, and a kimono parade.

When you’re done admiring the pastel pink blossoms, head over to the Supertree Grove for Anime Garden, where there’ll be free anisong concerts, a screening of anime blockbuster Your Name, meet-and-greet sessions with celebrity cosplayers, and even a glorious Pikachu dance parade.
