COACH RESTAURANT SINGAPORE REVIEW: COACH-BRANDED DISHES, CAVIAR BAGELS & FRIED CHICKEN BUCKETS!

You’ve heard the news: the first-ever Coach Restaurant in Singapore is now open at Jewel Changi Airport, right next to the Coach retail and boutique store. If you’ve been curious to know if the Coach Restaurant’s worth trying out, here’s our review on what we think are the hits and misses from the menu.

Plenty of fashion brands have been branching out into the dining scene lately, with Coach already opening a bar, coffee shop and now a full-fledged restaurant concept. The new Coach Restaurant is definitely the most upscale and elevated out of the 3 F&B concepts, and you can expect more substantial main dishes that range from seafood, steaks, diner fare and more. Prices for food items start from $9, with an extensive selection of starters, raw appetisers and side dishes to choose from.

Maine Lobster, $95

The restaurant is primarily a woodfire grill-specialty joint—inspired by New York’s iconic steakhouses—so you should definitely order some of their signature dishes from the grill. The Maine Lobster ($95) served with a zesty hollandaise sauce is a favourite, and is flown in specially from Boston just for the restaurant. At the price point, it’s definitely a splurge, but if you’re in the mood to treat yourself, go for it.

USDA Prime Black Angus Rib-Eye 250g, $90

Steak lovers have more freedom to choose, with various premium steak cuts available from the Butcher’s Selections starting from $40 for a 200g steak. Our USDA Prime Black Angus Rib-Eye 250g ($90) was cooked to a perfect medium-rare, but unfortunately the cut was much fattier than we liked. Steaks are also topped with a knob of Signature C Butter for a touch of Coach branding. The side dishes surprised us with how good they were: especially the Creamy Sweet Corn & Jalapeño ($12) and Duck Fat French Fries ($8). The Creamy Sweet Corn & Jalapeño is not your average creamed corn dish—it’s ultra sweet, creamy and flavourful, with a very subtle hint of spice from the jalapeño. The Duck Fat French Fries were also ultra crisp, and you can tell they’re the hand-cut kind.

The NY Slice, $9

The Chicken Bucket, $28

For their diner fare, we’d say skip the The NY Slice ($9) and go for The Chicken Bucket ($28) instead. The crispy chicken drumsticks are perfectly coated with a light and flavourful batter, served in a Coach-branded leather bucket for extra flair. But what stands out more is definitely the trio of homemade sauces it comes with: Hot Honey, Hot Sauce and Ranch. Our favourite was the Hot Honey, but spice lovers will definitely enjoy the lingering kick from the Hot Sauce too.

Black and White Bagel, $18

Japanese Yellowfin Tuna Tartare, $28

Classic Steak Tartare, $28

Maryland Crab Cake, $30

Don’t sleep on their appetisers either, especially the Black and White Bagel ($18), a perfectly toasted mini bagel sandwich swiped with a generous dollop of caviar—umami and well-balanced in flavour. The Classic Steak Tartare ($28) is a showstopper: a finely chopped beef tartare moulded to look like a giant C logo, this dish is definitely one for the ‘gram. But compared to the steak tartare, we much preferred the Japanese Yellowfin Tuna Tartare ($28) instead, which was much more refreshing and paired great with the handmade chips for dipping.

20 Layer Chocolate Cake, $18

Flaming PB&J Bombe Alaska, $18

We ended off with dessert of course, and our pick has got to be the iconic 20 Layer Chocolate Cake ($18), a towering multi-layered chocolate slice that was decadent and rich, with both creamy and crunchy chocolate textures in each bite. Boozy dessert lovers can go for the Flaming PB&J Bombe Alaska ($18), a spin on the classic peanut butter and jelly with a torched meringue shell.

Branded F&B concepts are not always a hit, so we were initially skeptical if a fashion brand could deliver an authentic restaurant experience. But we were pleasantly surprised that the Coach Restaurant actually did—and even without the hype of the Coach brand to ride on, the establishment certainly serves up restaurant-quality dishes that are both delicious and photogenic. The space is also great for date nights or classy night outs with friends: with a snazzy New York-inspired ambience, rich brown leather sofas and even a taxi cab ceiling centrepiece.
