Before applying to overseas schools, you’ll first need to figure out your objective. Why do you wish to study abroad? A couple of possible reasons might be to further your academic studies, experience new environments and lifestyles, or explore other career opportunities. Once you’ve figured out the main reason for wanting to study overseas, make sure to keep that in mind as you proceed to choose your course, university and destination. To decide these 3 key things, you’ll need to:

1. Know what are the interests you wish to pursue

Before setting your mind on the specific university you want, take some time to examine your interests. Knowing where your interests lie will aid in deciding the kind of course/major you wish to undertake, which will lead you to the university best suited for your needs, and ultimately shape your future career path.

Understand that once you pick a university course, you’ll essentially be “stuck” with it for the next 3-4 years, so it’s absolutely essential that you choose a course that you’re passionate about. If you’re unsure about where to start, not to worry—think about the big picture first, then narrow down your options. For example; if your interest is in Business or Commerce, you might be interested in courses like logistics/supply chain or business analytics. If you’re interested in all things Technology, think about if you’re more keen on areas like Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security, Robotics; so on and so forth. 2. Decide on your study destination

Once you know your desired career path and the courses you want to take, you can think about your ideal study destination. The country you’re studying in plays a big part in moulding your overall overseas study experience, so choose wisely!

In terms of career, research about the most common/sought after careers in that particular country. Is there a demand for the job you wish to pursue and are there opportunities there to help you realise your dream? Most importantly, envision yourself actually living in that country: if you’re actually able to live (and love) the lifestyle, sights, weather and people there!

3. Select your university

Finally, it’s time to choose your desired university: probably one of the toughest decisions when it comes to further education. Choosing a university involves a couple of factors that you’ll want to consider:

  • Overall & subject rankings; you’ll want to take note of the university’s standing in comparison to other universities in the area, as well as the courses that they’re most known for
  • Recognition; is the university well-known and does it have a good reputation professionally?
  • Programme structure; how is the curriculum carried out, how are classes conducted (coursework/project-based etc.), what kind of research opportunities or practical experiences will you gain?

Entry requirements; if the university checks all your boxes, you’ll then need to examine if you meet their requirements as a potential student

It’s good to note that various universities/colleges have different specialisations or are more geared towards certain areas of study. For example, Monash University in Melbourne, Australia is well-known for their Art, Design and Architecture, Business and Engineering disciplines; while Cranfield University in the UK is known for their master’s and research programmes, as well as Science and Technology courses.
