This underrated izakaya spot in Orchard is “adults only”, but not for the reason you’re thinking—you must be able to drink alcohol in order to eat here! Izakaya Naniwa is probably one of Singapore’s oldest diners, tucked away in Cuppage Plaza.

This is one of those “if you know you know” hidden gems, boasting affordable and authentic Okinawan fare. They even retain the traditional Japanese izakaya vibe with floor/tatami seating, and you’re also required to take off your shoes!

The tiny place is run by a Japanese couple, and there isn’t even any written English menu available online! Just like in a traditional Japanese izakaya, you’ll only know what’s available for the day when you visit, which is how you know Izakaya Naniwa is the real deal.

Dishes are affordably priced from $3 to $18 each, with different dishes available daily, as well as cooked food items displayed on the counter for you to pick “cai fan”-style. You can expect Okinawan dishes like meats, seafood, fresh sashimi, stewed dishes, stir-fried appetisers and more.

What makes Izakaya Naniwa “adults only” is the fact that it’s compulsory to order alcohol to drink while you’re there. Each person is required to order at least 3 glasses of alcohol per hour, and if you fail to meet the quota or if you just don’t feel like drinking, you’ll need to pay a “cover charge” of $25 per person instead! Izakaya Naniwa only accepts reservations (no walk-ins) via WhatsApp at 9007 1889, and there’s no dining limit as long as you keep ordering alcohol/food.
