Have a drink, play arcade games, and soak in the nostalgia
Recently opened in Tanjong Pagar for those working in the CBD to swing by and kick back is NINETEEN80, the latest to jump onto the bandwagon of arcade bars but with an irresistible twist of its own – it’s 80’s inspired.
Filled with plenty of retro influences that are sure to bring back fond memories of our younger days, the conveniently-located watering hole has pixelated decor, “OG” arcade games like Pac-Man and Space Invaders, and signature cocktails that pay tribute to the love for sweet alcoholic concoctions then!
Right from the get-go, the bar’s entrance is already photo-worthy with an inviting neon-lit sign and a mirrored ceiling.
Lots of neon lights, a psychedelic pink Tron-inspired hallway, and murals with 80’s pop culture references like Bruce Lee and the iconic “1-177155-4” pager code are also some of the other photo ops available behind the door!
Of course, the highlight is undoubtedly the arcade machines, which includes games like Space Invaders, Metal Slug, Street Fighter 2, and Mortal Kombat. Here’s a secret – the machines are chronologically ordered according to the quality of the graphics and you’re supposed to make your way down the row, starting from Space Invaders!
As an added bonus, tokens are completely free-of-charge for now, although they will cost $1 each when this undetermined grace period is over.
What’s more, great attention is paid to details in NINETEEN80 to ensure that you really feel like you’re back in the 80’s – their menus are jotter books, coasters are designed to look like floppy discs, and even their bar stools are shaped as bottle caps!
Staying true to the theme, the bar’s signature cocktails and cocktail remixes are mostly sweet-tasting and colourful – just like how the 80’s liked it.
Those who like Baileys will enjoy Like Water for Chocolate ($20), which comes adorably garnished with rainbow sprinkles, while those who have a sweet tooth will appreciate the Donna Summer ($20), which comes with white rum, orange liqueur, and strawberry puree!
The Blue Lagoon (Super Disco Blend) ($18/glass, $50/jug) is a crowd-favourite though, and comes served in jugs too just like how they used to do it back in the days – made with vodka, blue curacao, fresh lime juice and yuzu juice, it’s light and refreshingly tangy!
The bar’s resident DJs will also be spinning all sorts of hip hop, R&B, disco, funk, and soul hits from the 80’s till 00’s every night from Wednesday to Sunday, so partygoers can be sure that they’ll be in for some disco grooving as well!
