Hip Xiong is Singapore’s one and only wet plate tintype portrait studio! Using modern equipment and refined techniques, the studio aims to revive the lost art of alchemy in 21st century film photography.
Operating much like any other photography studio, Hip Xiong offers individual, couple and group portrait services for up to five subjects at a time. These services, however, come complete with a behind the scenes look at the process of having an image of you formed by real silver on a tin plate. Allowing participants to bring home a physical piece of unique imagery after each session, individual portraits will cost $200 for a 45-minute photoshoot, couple sessions will cost $300 for 45 minutes, and group shots will cost $600 for a 1 hour 30 min photoshoot.
What’s more, the studio also offers 2 hour individual and 3 hour couple workshops for an estimated $500 and $700 respectively. In these workshops, participants can learn about the science, history and theory behind the tintype wet plate collodion process, and how to properly handle and maintain them. Guided by the professionals themselves, these workshops tutorial the entire process, from preparing the plates to exposing, developing, fixing and varnishing them with the use of modern day strobe lights and proper exposure. By the end of the session, each participant would have created at least 2 tintypes, which they can keep as souvenirs!
