10 Local Musicians To Look Out For

In an industry that might seem so hard to break away from conventional moulds, especially in Singapore, many local music talents have somehow managed to find their own unique voice. Many are experimenting and coming up with exciting music, making waves not only in the local scene but also internationally. #supportlocal by checking out these up and coming talents that might just be the next big thing.
1. MYRNE

source

MYRNE (pronounced mern) is merely 21 years old and is already making waves not only in the local music scene but also down under, holding 5 shows in Australia this month. His classical background gives his music a soft melodious quality that is easy to listen, pitting him in the forefront of electronic music’s new wave.
Find him on Facebook and Soundcloud.
2. Subsonic Eye

source

Alternative dream pop band Subsonic Eye is all about wispy vocals and catchy guitars. The band’s hazy aesthetic is an outlet for them to air their grievances of the daze of daily life. Their heavy handedness in the use of reverb is a reflection of their weariness, while not obscuring their dreamy guitars and drawling vocals.

3. TOMGIRL

source

Sexy, seductive and sensual – that is TOMGIRL. Perhaps an alter ego of Cherie Ko and Ted Doré, the dark noir pop duo brings a riveting act of heavy guitar riffs, throbbing drums and bass, as well as an aesthetic that is unprecedented in our local scene.
Find them on Facebook and their website.
4. Xingfoo&Roy

source

Xingfoo&Roy is part teenage emo-rock, part fuzzy guitar rifts and catchy tunes (think Foals). The trio draws inspiration from their daily lives, a reflection of the local climate and oftentimes the carefree rebellion of youth. Often playing at gigs in hidden bars and travelling on tour with music festivals, they are slowly maturing into their music and growing from recording music in each others’ bedrooms.
Find them on Facebook and Bandcamp.
5. Disco Hue

source

Electronic pop quartet Disco Hue recently performed at Neon Lights alongside famed international acts like Foals and Sigur Ros. They’ve also been heavily featured on local radio channels and their debut EP, Arcade, peaked at #2 on the iTunes Pop Chart in Singapore. If you’re into ’80s synth hooks and syrupy vocals, Disco Hue will leave you addicted to their catchy tracks and retro aesthetic.

6. midst

source

Deep, sultry vocals that can lull you to sleep layered over gentle guitar licks and electronic ambient tracks. The budding trio’s experimentation of instrumentally-driven electronic ambient chords is commendable seeing how well produced their self-titled debut EP was, the four tracks a smooth complement of each other with their smooth vocals, hushed melodies and introspective, intimate lyrics.

7. Mediocre Haircut Crew

source

One of the most promising acts in the local rap scene, Mediocre Haircut Crew rose to prominence in 2015 with its single ‘Suburbia’, and ever since then they have not been backing down. Besides being invited to play for Lush 99.5 FM’s Kaleidoscope parties at Velvet Underground and Zouk, they’ve been awarded trophies by the local hip hop community, all within the space of a year of their inception. Their undeniably ’80s influenced style has never been seen in the local hip hop scene, which is probably why they have been having such a prolific career.

8. Fzpz

source

This producer has been making waves, creating some splendid tracks that are heavy on bass and synth. Classically trained, his tracks meld jazz and boom bap influences, coming together perfectly to present smooth and stylish earworms.

9. Jasmine Sokko

source

One of Singapore’s freshest singer-songwriter and producer, Jasmine Sokko, is making her presence known. Often featured on Spotify’s most streamed local music talents playlist, her refreshing electronic tracks bring to mind an afternoon party by the beach. Her saccharine vocals are accompanied by her catchy melodies and thumping beats in her single ‘1057’ – she’s only produced one song and we’re already itching to hear more from her.
Find her on Facebook and Soundcloud.
10. Specific Islander

source

Tropical pop – never heard of it? Specific Islander will take you on an island vacation with their dreamy, shoegaze synthesizers, slide guitars and bossa nova grooves. This experimental group is so different from anything we’ve heard in the local scene that we are welcoming more of whatever they can come up with.
