DIY “FLOATING” FLOWER VASE AT THIS AESTHETIC KOREAN-STYLE CRAFT STUDIO IN SINGAPORE!

Flowers that don’t need any watering and can last virtually forever? Make your own custom everlasting “floating” flower vase at this Korean-style DIY studio in Singapore!

Miyo Candle is a cosy and aesthetic craft studio with various DIY candle workshops, but they also have other unique workshops such as the Bouquet Herbarium Class ($52 per person) where you get to make your own custom flower herbarium!

The concept of the herbarium stems from “preserving” flowers and bouquets that have sentimental value instead of leaving them to wither and be thrown away. The flowers in the herbarium are encased in oil, leaving them to swish and “float” slightly whenever the herbarium is shaken or moved.

You can bring your own flowers (arrangements to be made at least a week prior to your session) for the class or let Miyo prepare a variety. The guided workshop lasts about 1 to 1.5 hours depending on the individual, and you can take your herbarium home with you right after class!

Here’s a rough outline of the process of crafting the flower herbarium is like:
1. Pick out your desired blooms and leaves

  1. Arrange them like a mini “bouquet”, placing each flower how you’d like them to be seen in the herbarium
  2. Assemble the flowers and leaves inside the glass vase and glue them securely with gel
  3. Pour in the oil to submerge the flowers and seal the herbarium
  4. Finish off with a ribbon!

The process might seem pretty simple, but actually requires quite a bit of patience and delicate hands, especially when assembling and gluing the fragile blooms into the herbarium—it’s not as easy as it looks! But the finished product is definitely worth the effort: the bouquet herbarium looks especially stunning against the light. We think the workshop is perfect as a date activity, or to do together with friends or even for a bridal party!

After the class, you’re left with a gorgeous piece of art that you can place as decor or present as a gift, and you don’t even need to care for or water it to maintain its beauty! Note that while the herbarium can last forever, the colours of the flowers will fade over time, especially with exposure to light.
