The confectionery scene in Singapore is bursting with cafes and bakeries that produce all our favourite sweet treats like cakes, cookies, and cupcakes (amongst others). However, bakeries that make healthier options are few and far between – think of all the sugar, butter and oils hidden beneath that colourful frosting on that cupcake. What’s more, confectioneries that cater to consumers with dietary restrictions are even less common.
Enter Delcie’s Desserts and Cakes, a little bakery nestled in Whampoa that makes their cakes without any eggs, dairy products, chemicals or egg-aiding agents such as emulsifier, stabiliser, commercial egg-replacer or most commonly used in vegetarian bakery, whey protein. This means you can indulge in your favourite goodies minus the guilt!
This labour of love was started in September 2008 with the simple philosophy of baking healthier after Delcie’s late mother was diagnosed with cancer. After her death, Delcie was inspired to finding even healthier alternatives for her baked goods.
Besides being recognised as one of top 16 international vegan bakeries by OneGreenPlanet.org, it has won a string of awards including the Healthier Bakery Award (2011 – 2015), approved Low Glycemic Index certifications for their diabetes friendly cakes, Top 5 Gluten Free Food Place in Singapore 2015, Singapore’s Most Innovative Heartland Enterprise award and Top 5 Healthy Chef in 2013.
Those with lactose intolerance, diabetes, gluten/egg allergies, or vegans can freely savour these options that cater to their dietary needs. Or if you’re just looking for a healthier alternative, this is it.
What’s more, most of their products are 100% cholesterol free, contain no trans-fat, and uses low glycemic index natural sweeteners, meaning its safe for your diabetic family members and friends to consume. The icing on the cake? It’s also Halal certified – something that is very much appreciated by our Muslim friends!
Many often have the misconception that vegan/hypoallergenic confectionery goods are bland and dry. However, Delcie’s cakes and desserts are beautiful decorated, and moist proving that healthier options need not necessarily subscribe to that stereotype. Besides cakes, they do customisable cupcakes, cookies and even macarons.
The Red Velvet Cake ($8.80) (vegan) is one of the best sellers in the shop, alongside their Banana Fudge (vegan & gluten-free), and Mud Fudge (vegan, gluten-free & diabetic friendly) cakes. While the ingredients of the cakes have been substituted with other organic/healthy ones, the flavours still taste the same as those you would expect from a regular cake.
The Banana Fudge ($7.80) boasts a thick, chocolatey flavour that is not overwhelming, and the fudge coats layers of soft banana sponge cake.
The Mud Fudge ($9) is a true treat, with dark chocolate that melts in your mouth filling your every bite. It is best consumed warm if you prefer your chocolate to be soft and gooey.
You’ll be pleased to know that Delcie’s recently launched many new flavours which include the Chempedak cake made using sugar-free vanilla sponge infused with organic vanilla beans, the highly sought after Cheesecakes that are gluten free, diabetic friendly and vegan in strawberry and blueberry flavour, and also two new baby friendly range of cakes such as Carrot Hummingbird cake and Vanilla Pound cake which are also diabetic friendly.
